National TVET Day 2024: Empowering Malaysia’s workforce for a sustainable future

KUALA LANGAT – National TVET Day 2024, celebrated on June 2, highlights the critical role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in driving Malaysia’s economic growth and workforce development.

This annual celebration highlights the significant contributions of TVET to the country’s economic advancement.

National TVET Week 2024 which runs from May 27 to June 8, encompasses a variety of activities designed to promote TVET as a viable and primary educational and career path.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his Malaysia Madani Budget 2023 presentation, emphasised TVET as a pivotal element in Malaysia’s development strategy.

TVET is seen as a key driver in producing a highly skilled local workforce that meets the demands of high-tech industries, thereby attracting quality investments and fostering economic growth.

The government’s commitment to enhancing TVET capabilities aims to ensure that the workforce can support high-skilled jobs with competitive salaries.

Representing CIDB Technologies Sdn Bhd which participated in the event, Unit Leader Instructor Zarulhakim Abdul Rahim said that events and initiatives similar to TVET should be increased significantly as they are highly beneficial to the public.

“Today, I see many students from various schools attending these events, which is excellent as it provides them with options and awareness about technical and vocational studies, especially for those who might not be interested in traditional academic paths.

“At CIDB Technologies, we have trained students who did not excel in their SPM exams, and many of them have become professional and highly skilled welders,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nur Fatin, 30, who visited the event this morning, mentioned that government initiatives such as TVET are encouraging.

“It is good news to see a focus on technical and vocational studies. In the past, previous generations primarily emphasised academic studies, which somewhat limited their knowledge.

“It is refreshing to see current and future generations gaining exposure to a broader range of educational opportunities,” she said.

The National TVET Day 2024 celebration is held at the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) in Kuala Langat, Selangor, from today June 7 til tomorrow (June 8).

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is set to inaugurate the event and launch the National TVET Policy 2030 tomorrow.

National TVET Policy 2030

The National TVET Policy 2030 aims to enhance the quality and relevance of TVET programmes by aligning them with industry demands.

This comprehensive policy is built on five strategic thrusts: comprehensive and synergistic governance, world-class quality and education pathways, efficient and productive industry collaboration, sustainable TVET financing, and promoting TVET as the primary career choice.

The policy outlines 23 strategies and 67 key initiatives, aiming to transform and empower the TVET sector, ultimately enhancing Malaysia’s global competitiveness.

It calls for collaborative efforts from all stakeholders, including planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of TVET programmes.

This policy aims to guide the TVET sector towards becoming a cornerstone of Malaysia’s journey to a developed nation status by 2030, emphasising responsive, flexible, and inclusive TVET programmes tailored to industry needs.

National TVET Day 2024 aims to achieve several key objectives:

Raise Awareness: Increase public understanding of TVET policies, initiatives, and available fields.

Attract Youth: Encourage more young people to consider TVET for their education and career paths.

Provide Information: Offer comprehensive details on educational and career opportunities within TVET.

Connect Job Seekers and Industries: Facilitate connections between students, job seekers, and industries for job placements and training opportunities.

Foster Cooperation: Strengthen strategic partnerships among ministries, agencies, and industry players.

Engage Communities: Involve schools and local communities through activities such as exhibitions, demonstrations, and skill challenges.
