THE government’s decision to provide RM100 book vouchers to students is being positioned as a long-term investment in Malaysia’s future workforce, with the Higher Education Ministry highlighting the initiative’s potential to strengthen reading habits and cultivate a stronger culture of knowledge among young people.

The ministry said the voucher programme reflects the government’s commitment to developing a generation of students equipped with the intellectual capacity, critical thinking skills and lifelong learning mindset needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive global environment.

“It is not only a meaningful incentive for students, but also a significant investment in the ministry’s efforts to develop the country’s finest talent who are holistic and competitive,” Bernama cited the ministry saying in a statement.

The ministry noted that the initiative extends beyond financial assistance, describing it as a strategic effort to reinforce reading as a core component of academic development while encouraging students to engage more actively with books and educational resources.

Officials said the programme is expected to contribute to a stronger intellectual ecosystem within institutions of higher learning by promoting continuous learning and greater appreciation for knowledge acquisition.

The ministry also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for introducing the initiative, describing the announcement as timely and capable of inspiring greater enthusiasm among students to pursue knowledge and academic excellence.

Further information regarding eligibility criteria, implementation procedures and voucher redemption mechanisms will be announced at a later date.

The voucher initiative was announced by Anwar during the ongoing Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2026, where he revealed that the benefit would be extended to secondary school students under the Ministry of Education as well as students enrolled in public institutions of higher learning.

Students will be able to redeem the vouchers at the annual book fair, currently taking place at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur until 7 June.

The initiative comes amid broader efforts by the government to foster a knowledge-driven society and encourage stronger reading habits among younger generations.

Education stakeholders have long maintained that improved access to books and learning materials plays a crucial role in enhancing literacy, strengthening critical thinking and supporting academic achievement.

By linking the voucher programme to one of the country’s largest literary events, the government hopes to stimulate interest in reading while making educational resources more accessible to students, reinforcing its wider agenda of talent development and educational excellence. – May 30, 2026
